Making An Insurance Claim

Automobile

As long as no one was hurt, the first step when you're involved in an accident is to trade information with the other driver.  You need to obtain: person's name, driver's license number, license plate, insurance policy number and name of insurance company. Information on the make and model of the vehicle is not essential, but might be helpful.

Once you have notified the police, you must report the accident to your insurance company. Your policy states, that if you cause damage to someone else's vehicle, or if someone else damages your vehicle, you must report it to your insurance company within seven days.

Property

If a tornado, flood, earthquake, or other disaster damages or destroys your property, you likely will have many questions and be faced with many decisions.  Concerns about emergency repairs and the costs of restoring or rebuilding your property can be overwhelming, and although you have purchased insurance, it may be difficult to think clearly about filing an insurance claim.

To protect your property from further damage, you should make all necessary temporary repairs, such as boarding up windows and patching holes in walls or roofs, as soon as possible, even if you have not yet seen the insurance company representative.  You can also move your building contents to a protected area and begin cleaning and drying items damaged by water.  However, you should not dispose of any items that you believe may be a complete loss until the company representative has examined them.

How do I report a claim?
Your insurance broker is the first link between you and your insurance company.  If the claim has happened after hours and your broker is unavailable you should contact the insurance company at one of the applicable number listed below.
Have your insurance policy in hand when you make the initial call.
